A new "you have to be there" platform shows up every few months. The reality is simpler: the right ad platform isn't the most talked about one. It's the one that matches how your audience actually buys and how your business actually operates.
Start with the business, not the platform
Before comparing Google Ads, Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn, it's worth answering a more basic question: how does someone decide to buy what you sell? A B2B SaaS product with a long decision cycle doesn't need the same approach as an impulse e-commerce product. The platform is a tool. The buying decision is the starting point.
Where your audience actually is
After the business comes the audience, not in the vague sense of "everywhere", but in terms of intent: where they're actively searching for a solution, where they're browsing, and where they're making a more professional decision.
- Google Ads tends to work best where active search intent already exists.
- Meta and TikTok make sense when you're building demand or reaching a more visual, impulse-driven audience.
- LinkedIn performs in more professional, B2B contexts, where cost per lead is a different order of comparison entirely.
The cost isn't just the budget
A platform can have a lower cost per click and still be the more expensive choice, if it demands content, creative or internal resources you don't have. The real cost includes the time and system needed to run it properly, not just the number on the dashboard.
The question isn't "which platform performs best in general." It's "which platform performs best for this specific business, with these resources, at this stage."
When it's worth testing something new
None of this means sticking to one channel forever. It's worth testing a new platform when there's a specific hypothesis behind the test, not because a competitor is using it. A small, controlled test with clear success criteria says far more than a large budget spread "just in case" across three platforms at once.
The right channel is the one you can measure, justify and explain, not simply the one everyone happens to be talking about right now.
